How to Find Cheap Flights to Taipei
Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) is the main gateway, about 40-50 minutes from central Taipei by MRT ($5) or bus ($4). EVA Air is your best bet for nonstop flights — they fly from LAX, JFK, SFO, SEA, and ORD with one-way fares starting around $380-500. EVA is a Star Alliance member and regularly ranked among the world's best airlines, so you're getting premium service at reasonable prices. China Airlines (Taiwan's other major carrier, not to be confused with mainland Chinese airlines) also flies nonstop from LAX, JFK, SFO, and ONT — often slightly cheaper than EVA at $349-450. Then there's Starlux Airlines — Taiwan's new premium carrier launched in 2020. They fly nonstop from LAX, SFO, and SEA with excellent service and competitive introductory pricing at $380-480. For budget options, Chinese carriers (China Southern, Xiamen Air) with a mainland stop can dip below $300 but add significant travel time. Korean Air via Seoul and ANA via Tokyo are solid alternatives at $400-500. Book 8-12 weeks out. September-October consistently has the lowest fares and best weather (less humidity, no typhoons).
Taipei for Digital Nomads
Taipei is a nomad sleeper hit — incredible food, fast internet, reasonable cost, and 90 days visa-free for US citizens. Budget $1,000-1,500/month. A studio apartment runs $400-700/month, a room in a shared place is $250-400. The food scene is genuinely one of the best in Asia — night market meals are $2-4, a beef noodle soup bowl is $3-5, and the variety is endless. Da'an district is the central nomad-friendly area — tree-lined streets, tons of cafes, close to the MRT. Zhongshan is another great pick — more artsy, good food, walkable. Coworking options include Aris Coworking and Changee, both with monthly plans from $100-180. Many cafes are laptop-friendly and stay open late. Internet speeds are excellent (50-100+ Mbps). Taipei's MRT is clean, efficient, and cheap ($0.60-1.80 per ride). The city is extremely safe — one of the safest in Asia. Mandarin is the primary language but English signage is everywhere and younger Taiwanese often speak English. Taiwan's healthcare system is world-class and affordable even without insurance.
